Codex Pro 100 vs Claude Code Max 5x: the $100 coding plans compared
Updated 2026-10-25. From OpenAI's and Anthropic's official pricing pages.
Claude Code Max 5x is the better $100 coding plan for most people: Claude Opus 5.5 is #1 on LMArena's Code Arena among the 23 models we price, and Max 5x adds $100 a month in Claude API credits. Codex Pro 100 wins if 5-hour lockouts are what stop you. OpenAI says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit in Codex, only weekly limits, and it has reset Codex limits 11 times since Oct 1. Which $100 plan gives more coding usage?
- Neither vendor says. OpenAI publishes local-message estimates only for Plus (for example 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol messages per 5 hours) and says Pro plans "currently have no five-hour limit", with weekly limits that "may also apply", per its Codex pricing page.
- Anthropic sells Max 5x as a multiple: 5x the usage of Pro per 5-hour session, with weekly limits on top, per its pricing page. It publishes no weekly multiplier and no token count.
- The practical difference is the shape of the limit. On Codex Pro 100 you can run one long session until the weekly cap stops you. On Max 5x a heavy afternoon can hit the 5-hour cap first, and then you wait for the next session.
- No independent measurement yet. The public tracker we cite for measured usage has data for Claude Pro and Max 20x but not for either $100 plan. Our Claude Max breakdown shows what it measured.
Which plan has the better coding models?
- Claude, by a small margin. On LMArena's Code Arena, Claude Opus 5.5 is #1 and GPT-6 Astra #2 among the 23 models we price. GPT-6.1 Sol, Codex's everyday model, is #4 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 #3.
- Max 5x also includes Fable. Anthropic lists Fable on Max at up to 50% of your weekly limits. On Pro it needs paid usage credits.
- Codex gives you OpenAI's full lineup, including GPT-6 Astra for the hardest jobs. Astra burns usage fast: OpenAI's Plus estimate is 5 to 45 Astra messages per 5 hours vs 15 to 160 for GPT-6.1 Sol.

How often do OpenAI and Anthropic reset limits early?
OpenAI has handed out far more free resets this month. Since Oct 1, 2026 our tracker logged 11 Codex limit resets from OpenAI staff, against 0 for Claude. Most come from the 28-day Codex run (Oct 5 to Nov 1) led by OpenAI's Tibo (@thsottiaux), which has delivered 9 full resets in its first 20 days. Treat these as a bonus, not part of the plan: the run ends Nov 1 and nothing says it will continue. Every post is in the Codex reset log and the Claude reset log.
What happens when you hit the limit on each plan?
- Codex Pro 100: OpenAI lets the agent finish the turn it's on. After that you can buy ChatGPT credits or run local chats with your own API key at standard API rates. In a CLI session,
/statusshows what's left. - Claude Code Max 5x: you wait for the next 5-hour session or the weekly reset, upgrade to Max 20x ($200), or turn on usage credits billed at standard API rates. Settings, then Usage shows where you stand.
- The $100 in API credits on Max 5x are for building on the Claude Platform (the API), per Anthropic. They're separate from your subscription usage.
Who should pick Codex Pro 100 and who should pick Claude Code Max 5x?
- Pick Codex Pro 100 if you code in long stretches and keep getting stopped by 5-hour caps, if you already pay for ChatGPT and want Work and Codex in one pool, or if you want GPT-6 Astra.
- Pick Claude Code Max 5x if you want the top-ranked coding model, Fable for big refactors, and API credits for your own scripts or apps, and you can live with 5-hour sessions.
- Still on $20? Our ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro for coding covers the cheaper tier, and every $100 AI plan lists the rest of this price point.
