Open-weight and local models Depends on license
Rules come from each model's license, not a hosted service. Apache 2.0 and MIT licenses have no content rules of their own. Some model licenses add a use policy. The law still applies everywhere, and any hosting service you use adds its own policy.
Check the model card and license before you build anything public.

How to read this
"Not allowed" means the policy text bans sexually explicit content. "No general ban" means the policy lists specific bans but no blanket rule on adult fiction; product filters may still block content. "Limited" and "Varies" mean the answer depends on context or product. We quote only official pages and label press reports as such.

FAQ
Which AI models allow mature content?
Among hosted services, xAI and Mistral have no general ban on adult fiction in their usage policies, though both ban specific harmful content. Anthropic, Google and DeepSeek prohibit sexually explicit content. OpenAI allows mature themes only in specific contexts. Meta's rules vary by product.
Are local models unrestricted?
No. Open-weight models follow their license, which may include a use policy, and the law always applies. Running a model on your own machine does not change what is legal.
Is every provider 18+?
Most require users to be adults or have parental consent, and several add extra protections for teens. Muse is 18+ only. Check each provider's terms for your country.
Is this legal advice?
No. This page summarizes official policy pages as of the date shown. Read the current policy before relying on it.
