ChatGPT Pro 200 allowance change: what ends on Oct 29

Updated 2026-10-27. From OpenAI's help center and Codex pricing page.

Quick answer

If you had ChatGPT Pro 200 at any point from Sep 22 to Sep 29, 2026, you keep the old, larger allowance through Oct 29, 2026. After that, your plan moves to the lower allowance that new Pro 200 subscribers already get, and the price stays $200 a month. OpenAI hasn't published how much lower it is, and only affected accounts get an email.

From OpenAI's About ChatGPT Pro tiers help article and Codex pricing page, read Oct 27, 2026. The cutoff for eligibility was 10 a.m. Pacific (1 p.m. ET) on Sep 29. "From Oct 30" is our reading of "through October 29"; OpenAI gives no time of day.

What changes for ChatGPT Pro 200 on Oct 29?

Your Pro 200 plan stays the same plan at the same price, but its included usage drops. OpenAI's help center says eligible customers "can use the previous included allowance through October 29, 2026 while their Pro 200 subscription is active." After that date, "your subscription will move to the lower included usage allowance. Your subscription price stays at $200/month."

Anyone who signed up for Pro 200 after the eligibility window has been on the lower allowance from day one. OpenAI says the cut is "to reflect our increasingly efficient models."

This is confirmed by OpenAI. It isn't the same thing as the wrong plan limits bug from mid-October, which OpenAI fixed and compensated with credits.

Are you grandfathered? How to tell

  • You qualify if you had an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from Sep 22, 2026 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Sep 29, 2026.
  • You get an email only if the change affects you. OpenAI says "Only users affected by this change will receive an email with additional details."
  • Canceled and came back? If you resubscribe on the same account, you still qualify as long as you were active in that window. The old allowance still ends Oct 29.
  • Signed up after Sep 29? Nothing changes for you on Oct 29. You already have the lower allowance.

You can see what you've used, and when it resets, in Settings, then Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & Billing in Codex. See how to check your AI usage limits for every app.

How much lower is the new Pro 200 allowance?

OpenAI hasn't said. Its help article and pricing pages describe every Pro tier in relative terms only: Pro 200 "includes more usage than Pro 100" and Pro 500 "offers the highest included usage of the three plans."

What we knowWhat we don't
The old allowance ends after Oct 29, 2026 (confirmed)The size of the old or new allowance in messages or tokens
The price stays $200 a month (confirmed)Whether weekly limits change along with it
Codex on Pro has no 5-hour limit right now (confirmed)The exact hour the switch happens on Oct 30
Keeping the old allowance never added Ultrafast (confirmed)How the new Pro 200 compares with Pro 100 in numbers

We'll update this page if OpenAI publishes numbers. Every confirmed change goes on our AI plan changelog.

What should you do before Oct 29?

Don't switch plans in a hurry. There are no numbers to compare yet, and moving off Pro 200 now just ends the old allowance a few days early. Use it while it lasts, then judge the new allowance on a real week of your own work.

OptionCostWhen it makes sense
Stay on Pro 200$200Same plan, smaller allowance. Fine if you rarely hit the weekly limit today.
Drop to Pro 100$100Saves $100 a month. Worth a look if the new Pro 200 feels close to Pro 100 for your work.
Move to Pro 500$500The highest included usage and the only tier with Ultrafast.
Stay and buy creditsPay as you goIncluded usage goes first, then your credit balance, in Codex and ChatGPT Work.
Claude Max 20x$200Anthropic's $200 plan, with Claude Code included.

Prices from our ChatGPT plan tracker, checked Oct 27, 2026. Pro is billed monthly only.

If you do hit the new limit, try these before you upgrade:

  • Use GPT-6.1 Terra for lighter Codex work. It burns credits at half GPT-6.1 Sol's rate, per OpenAI's Codex pricing. See GPT-6.1 Terra vs Sol.
  • Skip Fast mode unless you need it. OpenAI says it uses included usage at 2.5 times the Standard rate.
  • Buy credits only for the overflow. They're valid for 12 months, per OpenAI's credits help article. Our Codex credits guide shows what a task costs.

One thing that won't work: asking Support. OpenAI says "Support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits." It can only look into usage that was counted wrong.

Weighing Pro against paying per token instead? Our Codex plan vs API calculator runs the numbers, and ChatGPT Pro 200 vs Claude Max 20x compares the two $200 plans.

FAQ

When does the ChatGPT Pro 200 grandfathered allowance end?

After Oct 29, 2026. OpenAI says eligible accounts keep the previous allowance through Oct 29, then move to the lower allowance new subscribers already get.

Who is grandfathered on ChatGPT Pro 200?

Anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from Sep 22, 2026 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Sep 29, 2026.

Is ChatGPT Pro 200 getting more expensive?

No. The price stays $200 a month. Only the included usage goes down.

How much less usage will ChatGPT Pro 200 have?

OpenAI hasn't published numbers. It only says new subscriptions get a lower allowance than Pro 200 used to include, and that Pro 200 still includes more than Pro 100.

Do I keep the old allowance if I cancel and resubscribe?

Only until Oct 29. If you were active in the Sep 22 to Sep 29 window and resubscribe on the same account, you qualify, but the old allowance still ends Oct 29.

Does grandfathered Pro 200 include Ultrafast?

No. OpenAI says keeping your allowance doesn't upgrade your plan or add Ultrafast, which is only on Pro 500.
