Gemini usage limit reached: what it means and what to do

Updated 2026-10-18. From Google's Gemini Apps Help and Google AI plans page.

Quick answer

It means you used your plan's compute-based allowance in the Gemini app. Google says the limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit, and Gemini tells you when it will refresh. With a Google AI plan you can keep chatting on Flash-Lite in the meantime. To see where you stand, open gemini.google.com and go to Settings > Usage Limits.

What to do when you hit it

  • Check the refresh time: Gemini shows a notice with the refresh time when you hit the limit. Settings > Usage Limits on gemini.google.com shows your usage.
  • Keep going on Flash-Lite: Google AI subscribers can continue the conversation with Flash-Lite.
  • Wait for the 5-hour refresh, unless you have also used up the weekly limit.
  • Upgrade: each tier raises the limit (Plus 2x, Pro 4x, Ultra 5x or 20x Pro). See is Gemini Ultra worth it.

Why it runs out faster than expected

  • Long chats: Gemini re-reads the conversation history, so cost grows as the chat gets longer.
  • Large files: long PDFs, codebases and spreadsheets cost more than short prompts.
  • Deep Research and media: Deep Research, images, music and especially video use the most.
  • Busy periods: Google may lower limits under heavy load, free users first, and may pause features like Deep Research for free users.

Make it last longer

Google's own tip: start a new chat when you move to a new topic, so Gemini does not re-read a long history for every answer. Save Deep Research and video for when you need them.

Google staff have also reset Gemini quotas on Antigravity for everyone, most recently on 2026-10-16. The resets page tracks these.
