Claude usage limit reached: what it means and what to do
Updated 2026-10-18. From Anthropic's Help Center and official pricing.
It means you used up your Claude plan's 5-hour session limit or its weekly limit. The message tells you when it resets: "5-hour limit reached, resets [time]" or "You've reached your weekly limit. It resets [day] at [time]." Your options: wait for the reset, turn on usage credits (pay-as-you-go at API rates) in Settings > Usage, upgrade to Max, or trim long chats. Claude, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all draw from the same limit.

The two limits on paid Claude plans
- Session limit: resets every five hours.
- Weekly limit: resets once a week, at a day and time shown in your settings. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable.
Usage depends on message length, file size, how long the chat is, tools like Research and web search, the model, the effort level and multi-step tasks. Usage on claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all counts toward the same limit.
How to check your Claude usage
On Pro, Max, Team or seat-based Enterprise plans, open Settings > Usage. Progress bars show how much of your current five-hour session and weekly limits you have used, and when each resets. Claude also warns you first: "Approaching session limit" or "Approaching weekly limit", or "You've used X% of your weekly limit" when the percentage is available.
What to do when you hit the limit
- Wait for the reset. The error shows the exact time. Your chat stays where it was.
- Turn on usage credits (Pro, Max 5x, Max 20x). In Settings > Usage, set a monthly spend cap and add funds. Requests then continue at standard API rates, billed separately, until your cap. The monthly API credits included with Max do not apply here.
- Upgrade if it happens every week. Max 5x ($100) and Max 20x ($200) give 5x and 20x Pro usage per session. See is Claude Max worth it.
- Use less per message. Start a new chat for a new topic, batch related questions in one message, keep reference files in a Project (cached content counts less), turn off tools you do not need, and use Sonnet or Haiku for simple tasks.
Common confusions
- "Limit reached right after upgrading": the weekly limit can still be in effect; check both bars in Settings > Usage.
- "Limit reached but I have credits": usage credits only kick in when they are enabled with a balance or auto-reload, and Max API credits are separate from them.
- Free plan: Free also has a rolling five-hour session limit, without the usage view and credits of paid plans.
