Claude extra usage: what it costs and when Max is cheaper
Updated 2026-10-25. From Anthropic's Help Center, official API prices and independent usage measurements.
Claude's extra usage, now called usage credits, lets Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x subscribers keep working after a 5-hour or weekly limit by paying standard API rates, billed on top of the plan. You prepay a balance in Settings > Usage and can set a monthly spend cap. Claude Opus 5.5 costs $4 per 1M input tokens and $20 per 1M output, so if you'd top up more than about $80 a month on Pro, Max 5x ($100) is the cheaper fix.

How much does Claude extra usage cost?
Exactly what the API costs. Anthropic's help article says usage credits are "billed at standard API rates", so the price depends on the model you're using when the limit runs out. Opus and Fable cost far more per message than Sonnet or Haiku.
| Model | Input / 1M | Cached / 1M | Output / 1M | Sample session |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $10 | $0.25 | $50 | $47 |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $0.20 | $20 | $19.60 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $0.10 | $10 | $9.80 |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 | $0.53 |
Per-token prices from Anthropic's pricing page, checked Oct 25, 2026. Sample session is our estimate: 2M fresh input, 8M cached input and 0.5M output tokens, roughly a heavy agentic coding session, with cache write fees left out.
That sample session costs about $19.60 on Opus 5.5. Switch to Sonnet 5.5 before you go over and it's about $9.80. Anthropic's own tip in the same article is to use Haiku or the latest Sonnet "for most tasks".
One Pro quirk: Fable isn't part of Pro's included usage. The Claude plans page lists Fable on Pro as "Usage credits", so every Fable message on Pro is paid at $10 in and $50 out per 1M tokens.
How to turn on extra usage in Claude
- Open Settings > Usage on the Claude website or desktop app.
- Find the Usage credits section and click Enable.
- Add a payment method if you haven't already.
- Click Adjust limit to set a monthly spend cap, or pick Set to unlimited.
- Click Add funds, enter an amount and click Purchase. Turn on auto-reload if you want it topped up automatically when the balance falls below a threshold.
If you pay for Claude through the iPhone or Android app, you still have to enable and buy usage credits on the web version. You can switch them off at any time in the same screen, per Anthropic's usage credits article.
Is Claude Max cheaper than buying extra usage?
For anyone who tops up regularly, yes. Going from Pro to Max 5x costs $80 more a month, and Anthropic says Max 5x gives 5x Pro's usage per 5-hour session. Going from Max 5x to Max 20x costs another $100 for 20x Pro.
Credits run out fast by comparison. Independent tracker wokey.ai measured real accounts and puts a week of Claude Pro usage at about $170 of API-rate value, and a week of Max 20x at about $1,643 (estimates as of Oct 19, 2026, not Anthropic numbers). On that measure, $80 of usage credits buys less than half a week of Pro-sized use, while the same $80 spent on the Max 5x upgrade multiplies your session allowance by five (our read).
- Buy usage credits if you hit a limit a couple of times a month, or need a few more hours before a deadline. Set a low monthly cap first.
- Upgrade to Max 5x if your top-ups would pass about $80 in a month, or you hit the weekly limit most weeks.
- Pick Max 20x only if Claude Code runs most of your working day. See is Claude Max worth it for the full Pro vs Max breakdown.
One catch with upgrading: Max still has weekly limits, so heavy users can hit the cap on Max too and end up on credits anyway. Check how close you get in Settings > Usage before you decide.
Usage credits vs the API credits included with Max
They're two different things, and the naming trips people up. Max 5x includes $100 a month and Max 20x $200 a month of credits for the Claude Platform, per Anthropic's monthly API credits article. Those work with the Claude API, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK.
They don't cover interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, and they don't pay for extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork. They also don't roll over: unused API credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. So hitting your Max weekly limit doesn't let you dip into that $100 or $200. You either buy usage credits or wait for the reset.
Why Claude extra usage seems not to work
- The warning is still showing: the "approaching your limit" notice can stay up as you cross over. If credits are enabled and funded, your next request goes through and the notice changes to "Now using credits."
- No balance: usage credits are prepaid. With a zero balance and auto-reload off, you're stopped at the limit.
- You hit your own cap: usage stops once you reach the monthly spend limit you set.
- You subscribed in the app: enable and buy credits on the web; the mobile app can't set them up.
- You expected a limit reset to refund it: Anthropic's limit reset article says a free reset doesn't refund extra usage you've already been billed for or change your credit balance.
Usage credits don't change when your limits reset. The 5-hour window and the weekly reset run on their usual schedule, which you can track on our Claude reset countdown.
How to keep the extra usage bill down
- Start with a small cap and raise it once you know your pattern.
- Drop to Sonnet or Haiku once you're on credits. Opus 5.5's output price is 2x Sonnet 5.5's.
- Start a fresh chat for each new topic. A long chat carries more context into every message, and on credits you pay for every token of it.
- Keep reference files in a Project instead of re-uploading them. Project files still count as context, so keep them lean.
- Plan heavy work around your 5-hour windows so included usage goes first.

FAQ
How much does Claude extra usage cost?
Standard Claude API rates, billed on top of your plan. For example, Claude Opus 5.5 is $4 per 1M input tokens and $20 per 1M output, and Sonnet 5.5 is $2 and $10.
Is Claude Max cheaper than buying extra usage?
Usually, if you top up often. Max 5x costs $80 a month more than Pro for 5x Pro's session usage, and independent measurements suggest $80 of API-rate credits buys less than half a week of Pro-sized use.
Do Claude Max's monthly API credits pay for extra usage?
No. The $100 or $200 a month included with Max only works on the Claude Platform (API, Console, Managed Agents, Agent SDK), not for extra usage in Claude or interactive Claude Code.
Can I use extra usage in Claude Code?
Yes. Usage credits apply to Claude chat and Claude Code in the terminal, and both draw from the same limits and the same credit balance.
Do Claude usage credits expire?
In most places, no. In jurisdictions such as Japan, credits bought from Sept 10, 2026 expire six months after purchase, and Anthropic emails you seven days before.
Can I turn off Claude extra usage?
Yes. Disable usage credits any time in Settings > Usage, and you'll go back to your plan's included usage only.
