Claude 5-hour limit: how it works and when it resets
Updated 2026-11-07. Official Anthropic help pages.
Claude's 5-hour limit starts when you send your first message and resets in full five hours later, per Anthropic. Free, Pro, Max and Team plans all have it. Verified Ultra accounts don't. Everything you use inside the window also counts toward your weekly limit, and Anthropic doesn't describe any rollover of unused session usage.
| Plan | Price | 5-hour limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | Yes |
| Pro | $20/mo | Yes, at least 5x Free per session |
| Max | $100/mo | Yes, 5x Pro per session |
| Ultra | $200/mo | None once verified (temporary limit until then) |
| Team, standard seat | $25 a seat | Yes |
| Team, premium seat | $125 a seat | Yes, 5x a standard seat |
Limits per Anthropic's help pages on usage limits and the Ultra plan, read Nov 7, 2026. Plan prices from our Claude page, checked 2026-11-07. Multiples are relative to Pro, as Anthropic states them.
When does the Claude 5-hour limit reset?
Five hours after the first message of your session. Anthropic's usage limits page says the period "starts when you send your first message, and your limit resets in full five hours later". It's a fixed window, not a rolling one that drips usage back message by message.
An example: you send your first message at 9:10 AM ET and run out at 11:30 AM. You're locked out until 2:10 PM ET, then the meter goes back to full. Your next window starts with the next message you send, which may be hours later.
To see where you are, open Settings, then Usage. The Current session bar shows how much you've used and how long until it resets. In Claude Code, the /status command shows what's left of your plan allocation. Our Claude reset tracker logs every reset Anthropic hands out.
Does unused Claude usage roll over?
No. Anthropic describes the limit as resetting "in full", meaning back to 100%, not 100% plus whatever you left on the table. Nothing in its help pages mentions carrying session usage forward.
The practical upshot: if you have a hard task, start it early in a fresh window rather than after you've spent most of it on small questions. An idle hour at the end of a window is gone.
How the 5-hour limit and the weekly limit work together
Both apply at once on every paid plan except verified Ultra. The 5-hour limit caps a single sitting. The weekly limit caps the whole week and resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account, per Anthropic. Everything you do in a session also comes out of the weekly pool.
That's why a fresh 5-hour window doesn't always help. If the weekly bar is full, you're stopped until the weekly reset, no matter what the session bar says. Heavy Claude Code users usually hit the 5-hour wall first early in the week and the weekly wall later. More on that in the Claude Code weekly limit.
Chat on claude.ai, the desktop app and Claude Code all share one meter. A long agent run in the terminal eats the same session your browser chats use.
Does Claude Ultra have a 5-hour limit?
Not once your account is verified. Anthropic's Ultra plan page says verified Ultra accounts "don't have a five-hour limit". Ultra, which was called Max 20x until Oct 30, 2026, costs $200/mo and gives 10x Pro's usage every week.
New Ultra accounts get a temporary limit until Anthropic verifies them, using signals like account and payment history. It goes away on its own. Verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and doesn't remove it. The quick check: if Settings, then Usage, shows no Current session bar, you're verified.
Max at $100/mo keeps the 5-hour limit, and so does Pro. If the session wall is what stops you, not the week, Ultra is the only plan that removes it. It costs twice what Max does and the weekly limit is twice as big (10x Pro against 5x). See Claude Pro vs Max vs Ultra for the full decision.
What happens when you hit the 5-hour limit in Claude Code
Claude Code may finish the step it's on instead of stopping mid-edit. Anthropic's Claude Code plan page calls this a wrap-up allowance, and you'll see "Usage limit reached ยท wrapping up" while it runs. It's small and capped, it counts toward your weekly limit, and it only covers a response already in progress.
On Pro it applies up to once per weekly period. On Max it can apply every time you hit a session limit. Anthropic says it's rolling out gradually, so your account may not have it yet.
One trap to check: if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code bills that API key instead of using your plan, per the same page. That's not a limit, but it can look like one when the bill arrives.
How to keep working before the 5-hour reset
- Use a limit reset if you have one. Anthropic sometimes gives eligible plans a free reset. Click "Reset for free" in Settings, then Usage, on the web or Claude Desktop (it isn't in the mobile app or Claude Code), per its limit reset page. More on how these work on our Claude resets page.
- Turn on usage credits. Pro, Max and Ultra can keep going on prepaid credits billed at API rates. See Claude extra usage for what that costs per model.
- Upgrade. Anthropic says "your new plan's limits apply right away". Our guide on whether upgrading resets your limits covers how this works across vendors.
- Wait it out. The session bar shows the exact time left.
How to make a 5-hour window last longer
Anthropic lists what drives usage on its best practices page: message length, attachments, conversation length, tools like web search, model choice and effort level. The changes that help most:
- Start new conversations. Long chats re-send the whole history, and chats long enough to trigger automatic summarizing use more of your limit, per Anthropic. In Claude Code,
/clearbetween unrelated tasks does the same job. - Drop the effort level or turn thinking off for routine tasks, and switch off connectors and web search you don't need.
- Pick a cheaper model for grunt work. Model choice changes how fast you burn the meter. On the API, Claude Sonnet 5.5 costs less per token than Claude Opus 5.5, so Sonnet for scaffolding and Opus for the hard part is a sensible split (our advice, not Anthropic's numbers for plan usage).
- Put repeat documents in a project. Project content is cached and counts less when you reuse it.
If your session drains far faster than this suggests, see why Claude Code usage drains fast.
How Claude's 5-hour limit compares
Codex on ChatGPT plans also uses a 5-hour window alongside a weekly one, and a few other tools copy the pattern. Our list of AI plans with 5-hour session limits puts them side by side with prices. If you're weighing a plan against paying per token, try the Claude Pro vs API calculator.
