Does upgrading your plan reset your AI usage limit?

Updated 2026-10-29. From Anthropic, OpenAI, GitHub and Cursor help pages.

Quick answer

On Claude, yes: Anthropic says upgrading from Pro to Max starts your usage fresh on the Max limits right away. On GitHub Copilot, no: you get the bigger plan's extra credits at once, but the allowance itself only resets on the 1st of the month. OpenAI says new Pro limits apply immediately but hasn't documented whether used Plus allowance carries over. Renewing a plan doesn't reset limits on Claude or Copilot.

Does upgrading Claude Pro to Max reset your usage limit?

Yes. Anthropic's Max sign-up article says: "Your usage also starts fresh on the Max limits right away, so if you've reached your Pro limit, you can keep using Claude without waiting for your session to reset." Its usage limits article says the same in shorter form: "If you upgrade, your new plan’s limits apply right away."

The catch is billing. Your billing cycle restarts on the day you upgrade, and you're charged for a full month of Max minus a prorated credit for the Pro time you hadn't used. Upgrade through Google Play and it works differently: you pay the full Max price and the leftover Pro value turns into extra days.

Claude Code runs on the same pool, so a fresh Max meter covers it too. Is the jump worth it? See is Claude Max worth it.

Does renewing Claude reset the weekly limit?

No. Anthropic's Max plan article says the weekly limit resets at a fixed time assigned to your account, and "Your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins."

So if your Pro subscription renews on a Tuesday but your weekly reset is Saturday, paying again on Tuesday doesn't bring the weekly limit back. You wait for Saturday. Settings, then Usage shows your exact reset time, and our Claude reset tracker logs every extra reset Anthropic hands out.

If Anthropic has given you a free limit reset, use it before you downgrade or cancel. Its limit reset article says an unused reset is gone once you do.

Does upgrading ChatGPT Plus to Pro reset Codex limits?

OpenAI hasn't said in writing. What it has confirmed is that Pro's higher limits apply the moment you upgrade. When a user asked on the OpenAI developer forum where the reset behaviour is documented, the OpenAI_Support account replied on Sep 8, 2026: "This article says Pro’s new limits apply immediately: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9793128. It doesn’t spell out how existing usage carries over. We’ll flag that documentation gap; we don’t have a timeline for an update."

Reported, not confirmed: several users on r/codex said in September 2026 that their weekly meter went back to 100% after moving from Plus to Pro. The forum user who started that OpenAI thread in August said his didn't. Treat a fresh meter as likely, not promised.

One thing changes for sure: Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 have no 5-hour limit in Codex right now, only a weekly allowance, per OpenAI's Work and Codex usage article. Which Pro tier to pick is covered in ChatGPT Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500.

The documented ways to reset Codex instead

If you just need this week back, OpenAI documents two resets. Unlike an upgrade, they spell out exactly what happens.

  • Banked reset. A free reset OpenAI sometimes grants. On Pro it restores the weekly allowance; on Plus, the 5-hour and weekly ones. Redeem it in Usage settings or with /usage in the Codex CLI, per OpenAI's resets article.
  • Paid instant reset. Offered to some Plus and Pro personal accounts. It restores 5-hour and weekly usage at once, and your next weekly reset moves to 7 days after your first request afterward, per OpenAI's paid reset article.
  • Credits. They don't reset anything, but they let you keep going after the allowance runs out. See Codex credits.

Don't ask support for a reset. OpenAI's Pro tiers help page says plainly: "Support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits." Every reset OpenAI staff have announced is on our Codex reset log.

Does upgrading GitHub Copilot reset your AI credits?

No, but you get the difference straight away. GitHub's license changes page says upgrading "does not grant a fresh AI credits allowance immediately", and the included allowance "resets at 00:00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month, regardless of your subscription billing date."

What you do get, per GitHub's billing docs: "Your usage from earlier in the billing cycle is counted within the new plan's larger allowance, so the additional credits are available to you immediately." You pay only the price difference, so Pro to Pro+ costs $29 for the rest of the cycle (our math from the list prices).

PlanMonthly AI credits
Copilot Pro ($10)$15/mo GitHub AI Credits ($10 base + $5 flex)
Copilot Pro+ ($39)$70/mo GitHub AI Credits ($39 base + $31 flex)
Copilot Max ($100)$200/mo GitHub AI Credits ($100 base + $100 flex)

From our Copilot plan tracker (github.com plans page).

Renewing does nothing either: GitHub's own example is someone who runs out on May 28, renews on May 30 and still waits until June 1. Which plan fits is in Copilot Free vs Pro vs Pro+ vs Max.

Does upgrading Cursor reset your usage?

Cursor says upgrades on The X Subscription "apply right away", per its pricing help page. It doesn't say whether the weekly usage pool starts over, so we can't tell you either. Check the usage view after you upgrade.

Legacy Cursor plans (the old Pro, Pro+ and Ultra) are clearer on money: the upgrade takes effect at once, and your credit for the old plan is based on its unused included usage, not days left. Included usage on those plans resets with your billing cycle, per Cursor's billing docs. More in Cursor limits explained.

Should you upgrade just to get your limit back?

On Claude it works, and Anthropic says so. Just know you're starting a new month of Max that day, not buying a top-up. If it's a one-off crunch, Claude extra usage may cost less.

On Copilot, upgrading is a fair deal because you only pay the difference and the extra credits land at once. You still won't get a clean slate until the 1st.

On ChatGPT, a paid instant reset or credits are the safer bet for a single bad week, since those are documented and an upgrade's effect on used allowance isn't. Upgrade when you'd want Pro anyway. FAQ

Does upgrading from Claude Pro to Max reset my limit?

Yes. Anthropic says your usage starts fresh on the Max limits right away, so you can keep going even if you'd hit the Pro limit. Your billing cycle also restarts that day.

Does renewing my Claude subscription reset the weekly limit?

No. Anthropic says your weekly reset day and time stay the same regardless of when your subscription begins. Check Settings, then Usage for the exact time.

Does upgrading ChatGPT Plus to Pro reset my Codex limit?

OpenAI hasn't documented it. It confirms Pro's higher limits apply immediately, and users report a fresh weekly meter, but OpenAI support said in September 2026 that the carry-over isn't written down.

Does upgrading GitHub Copilot reset my AI credits?

No. The extra credits from the bigger plan are available at once, but the allowance only resets at 00:00 UTC on the 1st of each month, whatever your billing date.

Can support reset my usage limit?

Not at OpenAI, which says support can't reset ChatGPT or Codex limits. Use a banked or paid reset, credits, or wait for the scheduled reset.

Does downgrading reset my usage limit?

No. On Copilot and Cursor a downgrade takes effect at the end of the billing period, and on Claude an unused free limit reset is lost if you downgrade or cancel.
