ChatGPT Business vs Plus: which one should you pay for?
Updated 2026-10-31. From OpenAI's pricing pages, help center and a staff post on X.
For one person, ChatGPT Plus wins. Business needs at least 2 seats, and a Standard Business seat gets the same Work and Codex limits as Plus, per OpenAI. For a team, a Standard seat costs the same $20 a month as Plus on annual billing ($25 billed monthly) and adds admin controls, SSO, no training on your data and 15 GPT-6 Pro messages per month. Heavy users can get a Premium seat ($125 monthly, $100 annual) with 5x Standard usage and no 5-hour limit.

From OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing and Business pricing pages and the Business overview and Business models and limits help articles, read Oct 31, 2026. Standard and Premium are the two Business seat types. Prices in USD per user, most countries.
Does ChatGPT Business have higher limits than Plus?
Not on a Standard seat. OpenAI's Codex pricing page lists the same 5-hour estimates for Plus and Standard Business: about 5 to 45 GPT-6 Astra messages, 15 to 160 GPT-6.1 Sol and 350 to 3,000 GPT-6 Luna, with weekly limits on top. (The Business models and limits article puts GPT-6.1 Sol at 15 to 150, a small gap between two OpenAI pages.) So moving from Plus to a Standard seat buys you no extra coding time.
A Premium seat is where the limits change. OpenAI says it gets 5x the Work and Codex usage of a Standard seat, no 5-hour limit and a weekly reset, per the Business release notes from Aug 24, 2026.
Chat is a separate meter. Both Business seats get GPT-6 Pro in regular Chat (15 GPT-6 Pro messages per month on Standard, 50 GPT-6 Pro messages per week on Premium), while OpenAI says Plus gets GPT-6 Astra only in Work and Codex. OpenAI calls Instant chat on Business virtually unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails.
What Business adds, and what you give up
- One workspace and one bill. The company buys seats and assigns them, and owners can move a seat from one person to another. Usage analytics and spend controls sit in the admin console.
- Sign-in and security. SAML SSO and MFA, SOC 2 Type 2, domain verification. Enterprise-only items such as SCIM and data residency are not included.
- Your data stays out of training. OpenAI says it won't train on a Business workspace's data, per the Business overview.
- Team features. Shared projects, workspace agents and connectors to Slack, Google Workspace, GitHub and Microsoft 365.
- What you give up. Memory with past chats is still "Coming soon" on Business, and memory sources aren't offered. The account also belongs to the workspace, not to you.
One more thing people miss: Business doesn't include API usage. That's billed separately, although OpenAI started offering promotional API credits to eligible Business workspaces on Oct 28, 2026.
What does ChatGPT Business cost for a team?
| Team | Plus for each person | Business, monthly | Business, annual (per month) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 people, all Standard | $40 | $50 | $40 |
| 5 people, all Standard | $100 | $125 | $100 |
| 10 people, all Standard | $200 | $250 | $200 |
| 5 people, 1 Premium + 4 Standard | n/a | $225 | $180 |
Our estimate: seat prices times seats, before tax. Annual billing is paid up front for the year. Prices from OpenAI's Business overview, read Oct 31, 2026.
On annual billing, a Standard seat costs exactly what Plus does, so a team gets the admin and privacy features for nothing extra. On monthly billing it's $5 more per person.
Business Premium vs ChatGPT Pro 100
These are the cheapest ways to get rid of the 5-hour limit in ChatGPT. Pro 100 costs $100 a month and is billed monthly only, per OpenAI's Pro tiers article. A Premium seat costs $125 monthly or $100 a month on annual billing, and you need a second seat in the workspace.
- Pro 100 comes out ahead for one person. It's cheaper month to month, you own it, and it includes up to $100 a month in API credits (OpenAI's eligibility rules apply).
- Premium makes sense inside a company. Work stays in the company workspace, and you can buy Premium only for the one or two people who code all day while everyone else stays on Standard.
- Usage is hard to compare. OpenAI doesn't publish how a Premium seat's allowance stacks up against Pro 100. Both got more Work and Codex usage on Oct 29, 2026.
Did Business Premium limits just double?
Yes, according to OpenAI. On Oct 29, 2026 at 12:56 PM ET, OpenAI's Tibo (@thsottiaux) posted: "We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today." The Business release notes for that day carry the headline "More Work and Codex usage on Pro and Business Premium Plans", though the text only spells out the Pro numbers.
| What we know | What we don't |
|---|---|
| Premium got more Work and Codex usage on Oct 29 (confirmed, release notes and Tibo) | Whether the boost is permanent |
| Tibo called it a doubling (confirmed, staff post) | Why the Business pricing page still says "5x more usage than standard" |
| Standard seats were not mentioned (confirmed) | Whether Standard will change later |
Which should you pick?
- Just you: Plus. You can't buy Business alone, and a Standard seat wouldn't give you more usage anyway. If Plus runs out every week, look at Pro 100 vs 200 vs 500.
- Two or more people at work: Business Standard on annual billing. Same price as Plus, plus admin, SSO and no training on your data.
- A team with one heavy coder: Standard for everyone, one Premium seat for the person who keeps hitting the 5-hour wall.
- Mostly coding through the API: check the Codex plan vs API calculator first. Per-token pricing can beat a seat for light use.
